Common Pests

About Rodents

They’re cute in cartoons, not in your kitchen. Rodents like mice and rats can easily find their way into homes through small cracks and openings. Once inside, they can chew through wires, contaminate food, and spread diseases through droppings and urine. They also reproduce quickly, so a small issue can turn into a major infestation fast.

How to Identify a Rodent Problem with BiteGuard

Rodents, such as mice and rats, are common pests that can cause significant damage to your home and pose health risks. They seek shelter and food indoors, especially during colder months, and can quickly become a problem if not addressed early.

What do rodents look like?

  • Mice: Typically 2.5 to 4 inches long (not including the tail), mice are small, with pointy noses, large ears, and a long, thin tail. They are light brown or gray in color.

  • Rats: Larger than mice, rats can grow to 9 to 11 inches in length (not including the tail) and have thick bodies, blunt noses, and short ears. Rats are typically dark brown or black.

Signs of a rodent infestation:

  • Droppings: Small, dark pellets scattered in areas where rodents are active (under sinks, behind appliances, in attics, etc.).

  • Gnaw marks: Rodents chew on wires, wood, insulation, and even furniture in their search for food and nesting materials.

  • Scratching noises: Sounds of scurrying or scratching in walls, ceilings, or attics, particularly at night when rodents are most active.

  • Odor: A musty or urine-like smell often indicates the presence of rodents or their nests.

  • Visible nests: Rodents build nests from materials like insulation, paper, or fabric in hidden places such as basements or attics.

Rodent prevention tips:

  • Seal cracks, gaps, or holes in walls, doors, and windows to prevent entry.

  • Keep food stored securely in airtight containers and clean up crumbs and spills promptly.

  • Set traps or schedule professional pest control to catch and remove any rodents quickly.
