Common Pests

About Ants

Where there’s one ant, there’s a whole colony. Ants are social insects that live in colonies, and when one finds food or water in your home, it’s just the beginning. They send out scouts to find resources, creating visible trails. These trails can quickly grow into full-fledged infestations, as ants invade through cracks, windows, or doors. Some ants, like odorous house ants, build multiple satellite colonies inside your home, making them difficult to eliminate. With a colony nearby, ants can appear in kitchens, bathrooms, and even behind walls, spreading their nests and multiplying rapidly. It’s essential to act fast to prevent them from taking over your home.

How to Identify an Ant Problem with BiteGuard

Ants are one of the most common pests found in and around homes. While there are many different types of ants in New Jersey—including carpenter ants, pavement ants, and odorous house ants—we’re focusing here on the most common invader.

These ants may seem small, but they can become a big nuisance, especially when they invade your kitchen, bathrooms, or outdoor spaces in search of food and water.

What do common house ants look like?
Typically, black or dark brown and about 1/16″ to 1/8″ in length, house ants have segmented bodies with a narrow waist, elbowed antennae, and six legs. They travel in large numbers and are known for creating visible trails between their nest and food sources.

Signs of a house ant infestation:

Ant trails: Seeing lines of ants along baseboards, countertops, or entry points is a clear sign of an active infestation.

Food attraction: House ants are drawn to sugary, greasy, or protein-rich foods. Even small crumbs or spills can bring them indoors quickly.

Nesting near moisture: These ants often nest behind walls, under floors, or near water sources like sinks and pipes.

Wood damage or rustling noises: If you’re dealing with carpenter ants, you might notice hollow-sounding wood or faint rustling within walls, as they tunnel through structures.

Outdoor mounds: You may also spot small dirt mounds around walkways, driveways, or the foundation—indicating a nearby colony.

At BiteGuard, we specialize in identifying the type of ant you’re dealing with and treating it at the source. Our expert solutions eliminate ants quickly and keep them from coming back—so you can enjoy a pest-free home, inside and out.
